Our Marathon Racing team competes in the Hasler series of interclub races against some of the strongest marathon racing clubs in the UK. From 2007 to 2010 our team qualified to race at the National Hasler Finals three years in a row. Our racing team have some very promising members with some representing Great Britain at internationals including the World Championships.
It is generally known that a marathon distance is 26 miles, however Kayak Marathon Racing distances mainly range from 4 to 12 miles depending on the division the racer is in. The Hasler race series organised by the British Canoe Union (BCU) consists of a large number of races, one at each canoe club that offers kayak racing on a regular basis. These club races are split into different regions. Each club can only score hasler points for their team at races within their region.
The hasler points are awarded for those people who complete the race, more points are awarded for those who finish in the top positions. The clubs with the most hasler points by the end of the season are allowed to compete in the Hasler Marathon Finals. There are many other kayak marathon racing events nationally in the UK as well as internationally.
A few of our racing members compete in sprint races throughout the year which are mainly held at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham. Sprint racing also known as flatwater racing is an Olympic Sport and takes place on flatwater normally on lakes. Sprint race distances are 200, 500 and 1000 metre races. Although the club does not offer its own sprint racing event, we still have members who train at our club for the National Sprint Regatta in Nottingham.
